How to edit a multicam podcast in Premiere Pro
Editing a podcast with several cameras means switching cameras every time someone talks. Doing it by hand is slow: you cut, check and repeat through the whole episode. This guide explains how to prepare your sequence and how to automate the cuts with Chismozo.
What to prepare
- A Premiere Pro sequence with each camera on its own video track (V1, V2, V3).
- Each microphone on its own audio track (A1, A2). A single stereo file with two voices, one per channel, also works: Chismozo reads one channel per track.
- Premiere Pro 2021 or newer.
Step by step with Chismozo
- Open the panel in Window > Extensions > Chismozo and choose your sequence.
- Tell it how many cameras you have. With 2, each camera is one person. With 3 or more, the lowest camera is the wide shot and the rest are people.
- Assign each camera its microphone, for example A1 for one host and A2 for the other.
- Press Analyze audio. Chismozo listens to each microphone and decides who is talking at each moment.
- Check the preview. Each person has a color and the "On screen" bar shows which camera is visible at each point.
- Adjust the rules if you want: minimum and maximum shot, how long before it switches, the cut moment relative to the first word, and the wide shot when people talk over each other.
- Press Cut sequence. Choose whether unused angles are deleted or left disabled, and whether to work on a copy of the sequence.
The settings most people use
- Minimum shot: avoids cuts that are too fast.
- Maximum shot: forces a camera change when someone talks for a long time.
- Cut moment: cut a little before or after the first word, and vary it so it does not feel mechanical.
- Priority per person: raise it for the person who should be on screen more.
